Emerging from Washington, D.C.’s African American communities in the 1970s, Go-Go has long been a part of the cultural identity of the city. However, in the 80s, the city began to crack down on Go-Gos, and the music was widely criminalized. While decades later in 2020, it was recognized as Washington D.C.’s official music genre, as we head into the genre's 50th year, its survival remains uncertain as a result of its past. The Next Crank Show, documents what Go-Go Music means to people as they work together to overcome its past criminalization to ensure it has a future. Rooted in long-term documentary practice, the project examines how musicians, educators and community leaders are responding to the genre’s most pressing contemporary challenge: an aging fan base and declining youth engagement.
